An ignored breast lump became breast cancer.
For 10 years, Juliet was told there was nothing to worry about the lump in her breast assuming it was probably nothing. Even when she asked for a mammogram at the age of 38, she was informed that the Malaysian screening guideline recommended mammograms for women aged 40 and above. She was never offered the option of having one done privately.
Years later, that same lump was diagnosed as triple negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive types of breast cancer, which is more commonly seen in younger women.
Her story reminds us that you know your body better than anyone else. If you notice a breast lump or any unusual change do not ignore it simply because you are told it is “nothing wrong.”
💗 If you notice a breast lump or any unusual change:
• Seek a second opinion if your concerns are dismissed.
• A breast lump should never be ignored.
• If you’re 40 and above, get a mammogram.
• If you’re younger, ask about a breast ultrasound or other appropriate investigations. Don’t assume you’re “too young” for breast cancer.
One of the most touching moments in Juliet’s journey was how strangers in the waiting room became friends. In difficult times, peer support reminds us that we are never alone. Sometimes, the greatest source of strength comes from people who truly understand what we are going through.

💗 Why Rural Outreach Matters
For many women in rural communities, accessing healthcare services is not as simple as making an appointment. Long travel distances, limited transportation options, financial constraints, and family or work commitments can all become barriers to health screening.
As a result, some women may delay or miss important screenings, increasing the risk of cancers being detected at a later stage.
This is why outreach programmes are so important. By bringing breast cancer and HPV DNA screening services directly to rural communities, we help reduce these barriers and ensure that more women have access to early detection and timely care.
Because every woman deserves the opportunity to protect her health, regardless of where she lives.
If you would like to support outreach programmes like this and help us reach more underserved communities across Sarawak, please consider contributing to our latest Go Bald Campaign. Your donation will help fund awareness, screening, education, and support initiatives for those who need them most.

💗 Bringing Life-Saving Screening Closer to Women in the Community
Sarawak Breast Cancer Support Group (SBCSG), in collaboration with Program ROSE, successfully organised the Breast Cancer and HPV DNA Screening Programme in conjunction with Pesta Kaul Kut Muara 2026 in Dalat, Sarawak.
This outreach initiative was aimed at improving access to breast health awareness and screening services, particularly for women in rural and underserved communities. Beyond providing screening opportunities, the programme created meaningful engagement with local residents while promoting the importance of early detection and timely intervention.
More than 100 women turned up for the programme, demonstrating the community’s strong commitment towards preventive healthcare. Nearly 50 women underwent breast cancer screening, while 20 eligible participants received HPV DNA screening.
The breast examinations identified 7 women with abnormal findings, who have since been referred to the nearest hospital for further assessment and follow-up. Laboratory analysis for the HPV DNA tests is currently underway, and results will be communicated directly and confidentially to the respective participants upon completion.
We were honoured by the presence and support of YB Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, whose commitment to women’s health and community well-being continues to inspire efforts to reach more women across Sarawak.
SBCSG extends its sincere appreciation to ROSE Foundation, healthcare professionals, volunteers, community leaders, and all partners who contributed to the success of this programme. Through collaboration and community engagement, we can continue ensuring that more women have access to the screening and support they need.

💗 Membawa Saringan Kesihatan Lebih Dekat Kepada Wanita Dalam Komuniti
